Leon Marchand's 200 Fly Gold Path? 2026 Euros Preview | SwimSwam (2026)

The 2026 European Swimming Championships in Paris are fast approaching, and the men's 200m butterfly is shaping up to be a thrilling event. With the reigning gold medalist and world record holder, Kristof Milak, opting out of the competition, the stage is set for a new champion to emerge. Leon Marchand, the 2024 Olympic champion, is the early favorite, but several other swimmers are ready to challenge him for the top spot.

Marchand, the French national, has already set a world-leading mark of 1:52.57 this season, giving him a significant advantage over his competitors. However, his recent adductor injury could be a concern. If he's able to perform at his best, he'll have a clear path to the podium. But if things don't go according to plan, several key contenders are ready to step up.

Krzysztof Chmielewski, the 22-year-old Pole, has been knocking on the door of his first senior elite international title. He finished second at the 2024 European Championships and the World Championships, and his time of 1:52.64 from last year's Worlds represents a lifetime best. Chmielewski will be a strong challenger, but his lack of long-course racing this year could be a question mark.

Richard Marton, the 24-year-old Hungarian, is another viable medal contender. He finished fourth at the 2024 European Championships, but at the 2022 edition, he captured silver in a much quicker outing of 1:54.78. Marton has the chance to come out from behind his countryman Milak's shadow and potentially steal the spotlight.

Italy brings two possibilities: Federico Burdisso and Alberto Razzetti. Burdisso, the 24-year-old Italian, has struggled to repeat his Tokyo performance, but he finished eighth at last year's World Championships and currently ranks as the fifth-swiftest European man. Razzetti, the bronze medalist at the 2022 European Championships, owns a season-best of 1:54.99 from the Italian Championships.

Several other swimmers, including Noe Ponti, Ed Mildred, and Hubert Kos, could also be contenders. Ponti, known for his 50m and 100m butterfly prowess, has several impressive short-course performances in the longer event. Mildred, the 23-year-old British ace, has been on a tear, including taking down the supersuited national record in the SCM 200 fly. Kos, the Olympic gold medalist, can't be counted out of any event he swims.

In the end, the 200m butterfly at the 2026 European Championships will be a thrilling race. With so many talented swimmers in the mix, it's anyone's guess who will emerge as the champion. But one thing is certain: the competition will be fierce, and the race will be a spectacle to behold.
